Landforms 1

I'm going to tell you about the Coastal Plain.  It has flat land and low elevation.  The Coastal Plain is 200 miles wide along the Gulf of Mexico, and 100 miles wide along the Atlantic Ocean.  Also it has wetlands, swamps, and marshes, and the rest of the land that isn't a swamp or marsh is used for farming.  The Coastal Plain has rich and fertile soil.
Now we are going to tell you about the Piedmont Plateau.  This is rugged land, and it is 125 miles wide.  Piedmont Plateau means " at the foot of  the mountains ".  It is a good farming area for cotton, tobacco, and other crops.  Areas with bad top soil are covered with forests, pastures, and orchards.
Next we are going to tell you about the Appalachian Mountains.  They form a divide for rivers that empty into the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.  The Blue Ridge Mountains is the chief ranges that make up the Appalachian Mountains.  The Cumberland Mountains are a part of the Appalachian Mountains system, and are also in the Eastern Tennessee and Kentucky.  They form a boundary between Virginia and Kentucky.  This area is also commonly called the Cumberland Plateau.  These Mountains are not good for farming.  Land there is covered with dense forests.  Dense  means thick. In the narrow valleys between the mountains  there are some small farms.  In the valleys there are orchards or meadows.  The Allegheny Mountains are also found in the Southeast.  They are found in West Virginia and Virginia.
